In 900 AD Native American peoples found turquoise in the Cerrillos Hills. The hills were named in the 1600s by the Tlaxcalan peoples as Nahuatl, Chalchiquitl, meaning “precious green stone” referring to turquoise, jade and emerald. Fast forward to the 1890s Tiffany and Co. took control of Turquoise Hill and created public demand for turquoise jewelry. Today Cerrillos turquoise is a rare and collectible find that is fundamental to any gem collection.
